3-Row SUV Comparison — Memphis, TN
Ford Explorer vs Expedition: Which 3-Row SUV Fits Your Family?
Both seat a family with room to spare, both tow, and both come in trims from practical to premium. The difference is scale. Here is how the 2026 Explorer and Expedition compare on third-row space, cargo, towing and fuel economy, using Ford's published specs.
2026 Explorer
2026 Expedition
Quick answer
Choose the Ford Explorer if your third row is mainly for kids or short trips and you want better fuel economy and easier parking. Choose the Ford Expedition if adults or teenagers ride in the third row, if you need cargo space with every seat in use, or if you tow more than 5,000 lbs. The Expedition gives 4.7 more inches of third-row legroom and nearly double the towing capacity.

Who rides in the third row?
This one question settles the choice for most families.
Explorer fits when…
Younger kids and occasional use
- The third row is for children or carpool runs across town
- You want second-row captain's chairs, standard on every trim except ST-Line, for an easy walkway
- Most of your driving is commuting, where 29 mpg highway on the 2.3L RWD adds up
- You park in tight lots in Midtown or Downtown
Expedition fits when…
Teenagers, adults and full loads
- Taller passengers ride in the third row on longer drives
- You need luggage space with every seat filled, which the MAX handles best
- You tow a boat or camper heavier than 5,000 lbs
- You want seating for eight with a second-row bench
Car seats and third-row access
Captain's chairs make the biggest practical difference for families with car seats. With chairs in the second row, older kids can walk through to the third row without anyone unbuckling a seat. The Explorer offers second-row captain's chairs as standard on every trim except ST-Line. The redesigned Expedition adds a 40/20/40 third row with a center aisle, which makes reaching the back easier still.
Towing: the clearest difference
Every 2026 Explorer comes standard with a Class III Tow Package and is rated up to 5,000 lbs with either engine. That covers many pop-up campers, small boats and utility trailers. The Expedition 4x4 is rated up to 9,600 lbs with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package, enough for most bass boats, pontoons and mid-size travel trailers. - Standard towing aidsPro Trailer Backup Assist, Pro Trailer Hitch Assist and a 360-degree camera are standard.
- A new Tremor trimThe off-road-focused Expedition, with the high-output engine.
Expedition or Expedition MAX?
Same engine, same seating and the same third-row legroom. The MAX adds length behind the third row.
| Expedition | Expedition MAX | |
|---|---|---|
| Cargo behind 3rd row | Up to 22.9 cu ft | Up to 37.4 cu ft |
| Cargo behind 2nd row | Up to 69.9 cu ft | Up to 84.5 cu ft |
| Cargo behind 1st row | Up to 108.5 cu ft | Up to 123.1 cu ft |
| Max towing (4x4) | 9,600 lbs | 9,000 lbs |
| Trims | Active, Tremor, Platinum, King Ranch | Active, Platinum, King Ranch |
The standard Expedition is the better pick if you tow near its limit or want the Tremor. The MAX makes sense when the third row is in daily use and you still need room for strollers, sports bags or a week of luggage behind it. With all seats up, the MAX offers 14.5 more cubic feet of cargo space than the standard length, which is the difference between a few grocery bags and a full set of suitcases.
EPA fuel economy by powertrain

| Model and powertrain | City | Highway | Combined |
|---|---|---|---|
| Explorer 2.3L RWD | 20 | 29 | 24 |
| Explorer 2.3L AWD | 20 | 27 | 23 |
| Explorer 3.0L V6 RWD | 18 | 25 | 21 |
| Explorer 3.0L V6 AWD | 18 | 25 | 20 |
| Explorer Tremor 3.0L V6 | 17 | 22 | 19 |
| Expedition and Expedition MAX 4x2 | 16 | 24 | 19 |
| Expedition and Expedition MAX 4x4 | 15 | 22 | 18 |
Memphis sees little snow, so rear-wheel drive is a practical choice for families who want the Explorer's best mileage. All-wheel drive still earns its keep on wet roads after a summer storm and on gravel driveways outside the city.
Size in daily Memphis driving
School pickup and curbside
The Explorer's shorter 198.7-inch body is easier to slot into a car-line queue or a tight curbside spot. The Expedition's 360-degree camera, standard on the redesign, offsets much of its extra size.
Garage fit
The Expedition is about 11 inches longer than the Explorer, and the MAX is nearly two feet longer. Measure your garage before you shop, especially in older Memphis homes.
Road-trip space
The Expedition's extra length goes into passenger and cargo room, which matters most on long drives to Nashville or the Gulf Coast with every seat filled.
Considering a used Explorer or Expedition?
Both are common on the used market. If you are looking at a 2020–2022 Explorer, check that the rear axle bolt recall 23V-675 has been completed; it covers bolts that can fracture and disconnect the driveshaft. Run any VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup before you buy. Test drive both on the same day
The quickest way to decide is to sit in the third row of each. Browse current Explorer and Expedition inventory, then bring the whole family and your car seats.
