Memphis EV Charging Map & Home Charging Guide

Range anxiety is a thing of the past. Learn exactly where to charge an electric vehicle in Memphis, how much it costs on your MLGW bill, and the facts about setting up a home charger.

Where can I charge my EV in Memphis?

Most Memphis EV owners do 90% of their charging at home using a Level 2 wall charger. When driving around the Mid-South, you can access dozens of public charging stations—including Level 2 chargers at shopping centers and DC Fast Chargers along the I-40 and I-55 corridors—all mapped and integrated into the Ford SYNC® navigation system and the BlueOval™ Charge Network. Ford EV owners can also use an adapter to charge at eligible Tesla Superchargers in the Memphis area.

The True Cost to Charge an EV in Memphis

A common misconception is that electric vehicles will drastically spike your utility bill. While your MLGW bill will increase, that cost is significantly offset by the total elimination of your gasoline budget.

Home Charging (The MLGW Advantage)

Memphis benefits from relatively low electricity rates through MLGW. Charging your Ford F-150 Lightning or Mustang Mach-E overnight at home is the most cost-effective way to "fuel" your vehicle.

  • Average Cost per kWh: Varies by season, but generally much cheaper than the national average.
  • Gas Equivalent: Fully charging an EV from empty usually costs less than a quarter of what it costs to fill a standard gas tank.
  • Convenience: You wake up every morning with a "full tank" of electricity.

Public Charging Costs

Public chargers are billed per kilowatt-hour (kWh) or per minute, depending on the network. These are more expensive than home charging.

  • Level 2 Public Chargers: Often found at hotels, parking garages, and some retail stores. Sometimes free, sometimes a nominal hourly fee.
  • DC Fast Chargers: The most expensive option, but adds massive range in 30-45 minutes. Best reserved for road trips to Nashville, Little Rock, or St. Louis.

Understanding Home Charger Installation

If you buy a Ford EV, setting up your home is your first priority. Relying solely on a standard 120V wall outlet (Level 1) is too slow for most drivers, providing only about 2 to 4 miles of range per hour of charging.

Memphis EV Charging FAQ

What is the BlueOvalâ„¢ Charge Network?
The BlueOvalâ„¢ Charge Network is the largest public charging network in North America offered by automotive manufacturers. It unifies multiple third-party charging companies (like Electrify America) under one account. You simply plug in your Ford EV, and the session is billed directly to your saved payment method via the FordPass App.
Can I charge my Ford EV in the rain?
Yes. Electric vehicles and their charging stations are engineered specifically to be completely weatherproof. You can safely plug in your Ford EV during Memphis thunderstorms or heavy rain without risk of electrocution or vehicle damage.
What happens if I run out of battery on the road?
Your Ford EV will give you multiple warnings and estimate exactly how many miles you have left. If you ignore the warnings and completely deplete the battery, the vehicle will stop. You would then need to contact Ford Roadside Assistance to be towed to the nearest charging station.
Do I need to upgrade my electrical panel for a home charger?
It depends on the age of your home and your current electrical capacity. A Level 2 charger requires a dedicated 240V circuit (similar to a heavy-duty clothes dryer or electric stove). An electrician can inspect your panel to see if it has enough capacity or if an upgrade is required.
Can my F-150 Lightning really power my house in a blackout?
Yes. With the available Ford Intelligent Backup Power system and the Ford Charge Station Pro installed properly at your home, an F-150 Lightning can act as a backup generator during an MLGW power outage, powering a typical home for up to three days.
